The Chicago Bears are my favorite team. My dad, God rest his soul, was a Bears fan. I remember the times of Walter Payton playing for the Bears. I remember the 1985 Bears crushing the New England Patriots, 46-10 in Super Bowl XX. They were known for their defense under the watch of Mike Ditka. I have multiple shirts representing the Bears, but that loss against the New England Patriots was embarrassing. If was a member of 1985 team, I would be ashamed that the current team is representing the Chicago Bears. The score was 38-7 at halftime and Tom Brady was being Tom Brady. He completed 30 out of 35 for 354 yards and 5 TDs, while Jay Cutler completed 20 out of 30 for 227 yards with 3 TDs, a pick, and a fumble lost. Let’s remember that Cutler’s numbers were when the game was out of reach. I changed the channel to the Seahawks-Panthers game. The Bears showed no interest until the game was impossible. Why should I have cared about the second half of this game?
According to an ESPN report, Lamarr Houston could be out for the season. The reason is because he was celebrating a sack while the Bears were getting blown out 48-23. I did see the celebration of the sack. It was stupid on so many levels. His selfish celebration hurt the Bears’ already bad defense. Why would you be celebrating a sack while your team is down 25 points? Thank God the Bears have a bye week. I cannot take any humiliating losses from another team. The loss against the Dolphins was bad, but this loss is worse. I fear that the Bears could get blown out by the Packers. If you are a Packers fan, I hope you are enjoying this column from a Bears fan. According to NFL.com, the Bears ranked 18th in yards allowed and 29th in points allowed this year.
I believe that the Bears’ defense is going to be a problem in the long run. Nothing has changed expect for stats. I also believe that when Lovie Smith was the coach, the Bears were great on defense, but the offense suffered. Maybe Lovie Smith is a defensive coordinator disguised as a head coach? Or maybe Marc Trestman is an offensive coordinator disguised as a head coach? Let’s remember the 2005 Bears who went to the Super Bowl. The quarterback who took us to Super Bowl XLI was Rex Grossman. I know the Bears lost to the Colts 29-17 in Super Bowl XLI. I take the view that Bears are inconsistent on offense, but horrible on defense. I have always defended Jay Cutler, but I cannot defend him anymore. He reminds me too much of Rex Grossman. He takes too many chances with the football. He relies too much on Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery. He should try to find the open receiver and stop throwing the ball into tight windows. I always told people that he is Brett Favre, but with a huge arm and more potential. I wanted Jay Cutler to be signed, but I was cautious about the amount of money he would receive. I will say this again: Jay Cutler is now Rex Grossman with a huge arm and less potential. I am unsure of the future for the Chicago Bears. Could they be one of the worst teams in the NFL?
I do believe that Marc Trestman should be in the hot seat because the defense has not improved. I know that this is his second season, but the defense is horrific. The offense is up and down this year. I believe that he should stay on for now, but next season he should be under scrutiny. If you are a Bears fan, you should write this season off. You should give up on this team because this team has given up on us. Maybe this is emotion talking, but it has to be said.
