Hardcore Henry is a new science fiction action movie, directed by Russian director Ilya Naishuller. It stars Sharlto Copley, Danila Kozlovsky, Haley Bennett and Tim Roth in various roles. The part of the title character, however, was played by various people on the crew (including the director himself). Speaking of which, the entire movie in first person as if looking through the character’s eyes the whole time.
That being said, the movie begins with the character of Henry waking up having been resurrected when his wife, a scientist, turns his corpse into a cyborg. However before she was able to give him the ability to speak, the airborne lab was invaded by a group of mercenaries led by a telekinetic with dreams of world annihilation. This, ultimately, led to the wife being kidnapped and Henry going on the run with the aid of a mysterious character played by Sharlto Copley (who essentially dies repeatedly, at least 8 or 9 times). Meanwhile, Henry is trying to rescue his wife and find a way to keep from losing power throughout the whole movie.
Anyone who has seen the trailer can probably guess what to expect. The movie was filmed to resemble a first person shooter video game, and it definitely succeeds. The only thing that let me know that I wasn’t playing a game was that my hands were empty. Basically, I had no controller. The story even plays out like some of the more cinematic games of the genre (with some additional humor). That being said, I enjoyed the movie. It’s not the best movie ever made, but I thought it had quite a good story and surprisingly well done action sequences. Also, even if you don’t otherwise enjoy the movie, it’s worth watching just to find out the truth of Coplay’s character. Speaking of Shartlo Copley though, he steals the show, having to play his character differently in each of the variations he dies (including a druggie, a punk and a hippie). Additionally, if you are a fan of first person shooters, you will most likely enjoy this movie.
