Top Five Fall Must Haves For Your Closet By: Alicia McPhillips

With the temperatures dropping (finally!) it is time to put away the shorts, break out the vests, and gear up for Fall. Below are my top five must haves to enjoy this glorious season to the FALLest! (golly, I’m so punny)

1) Oversized Sweater

For those chilly days where all you want to do is wear leggings (story of my life) this is perfect to throw on top. You can easily find oversized sweaters wherever you like to shop; whether it be at your local thrift store, Target, or store at the mall. Coming in a variety of colors and knits, oversized sweaters are such a versatile layering staple piece for me. Since they are oversized, it’s like being wrapped in a big, cozy blanket your grandma knit for you (if your grandma can knit-send her my way, thank you so much.) Nothing makes me happier than oversized sweaters; run-don’t walk-to get yours.

2) Blanket Scarves

Who wouldn’t want something that can double as a blanket, and a scarf (and as home décor in my house)?!  Paired with a simple long sleeve and a pair of jeans, or with a dress and tights, this scarf is your new best friend during the colder months. If you’re thinking to yourself ‘the only ones I’ve seen are super over priced!’ HAVE NO FEAR. Get into your car (or your preferred mode of transportation) and head to your local craft store and make a beeline for the fabric section. Pick the fabric of your choice and have it cut to your desired length, and BAM- instant custom blanket scarf.

3) Boots

Booties, ankle boots, knee-highs, thigh-highs, combat boots- I love them all! Wearing any type of boot can make it seem like you really tried with your outfit, but if your like me, you go for comfort, which means I throw on leggings, an oversized sweater (or flannel) and boots, then head out the door. There are so many different styles, you can surly find one to fit your style. Bonus: they can be found virtually anywhere. Shoes are something I see as an investment piece since I’m pretty much done growing; but you can spend however much you want and still look outstanding! Keep in mind: if you get a pair that has suede material- waterproof them before you wear them, that way the rain, ice, and snow won’t ruin them!

4) Flannels

What says ‘Happy Fall Y’all’ more than a flannel? If oversized sweaters aren’t your cup of tea, try this option instead. Again, throw this on over a pair of jeans, or leggings, and you are ready to do all your Fall festivities. My favorite place to get these are in the men’s section because they are long enough to wear comfortably with leggings; and I wont have to worry about them shrinking in the dryer and being too short. Flannels for all!

5) Army Green Military Jacket

I’m not too sure of the ‘proper’ name for these jackets; but you know it when you see it. It’s hard to look cute picking pumpkins, when you feel like a pumpkin yourself wearing a bulky coat and scarf. The beautiful thing about these jackets is that they can be worn as your main jacket during the fall, or used as a layering piece, depending on how thick it is. You don’t have to sacrifice warmth for style, and I’ve never been happier.

Regardless of what you choose to wear this season, just remember to have fun with it!  Happy Fall!
