If you are like me, you have to travel to come to the campus. I live in Dixon, which is an hour and a half away (I can make it in an hour on a good day with no traffic). With all this traveling, it’s pretty common to miss meals; whether it is breakfast because you have an early class, or you miss lunch because you’re in class and you don’t have time to grab a bite. Sure you could stop at the drive through of somewhere, but that can get pricy and old real quick. Don’t get me wrong- I love chipotle and Panera as much as the next person, but too many times have I dropped my waffle fry in my car.
For my preferences, I like my snacks to be healthy, convenient, and quick! Of course I grab the “not so healthy” snacks from time to time, but for the most part I try to keep it tasty yet nutritious.
-Fresh fruit-This one is a no brainer. Grabbing an apple or banana and running out of the house is one of the easiest things you can do. If you have a little more time peel an orange or throw some berries into a bag and you’re good to go.
-Smoothies-these are like the first one on my list. They take about 5 minutes from start to finish and you can put practically anything in them. I opt for a simple strawberry, banana, honey, oats, and soymilk.
-Trail Mix-Store bought, or you can make your own, this is an easy way to get protein, fruits, and even a little sweetness. They have so many different kinds from the store you can buy pre-made that can help curb your hunger.
-Cliff Bars/granola bars- Prepackaged and chock full of flavor, these are one of my go-to’s. I’ll admit that Cliff Bars look a little…repulsive but don’t let that turn you away from them! They have so many flavors; it’s like eating dessert that’s actually good for you and get you full! I recently came across this brand called Awake Granola and each bar has as much caffeine as half a cup of coffee so you can kill two birds with one stone if you weren’t able to grab a cup before you left for the drive! My favorite is the Chocolate Carmel flavor.
Muffins- If you’ve got free time on the weekends making muffins from scratch or even from the mix at the store is an easy way to have delicious muffins to grab to stick in your bag. Some times when I have a little more time I like to make banana bread for the week (even though it lasts maybe two or three days). I love pastries!
Protein Balls- I feel like a broken record, but you can put anything into these! My favorite is to do two cups oats, 1/3 honey, 1/3 peanut butter, ¼ chia seeds, and ½ a cup (or a little more) chocolate chips. Roll them up, pop them in the fridge and grab a few for on the go, or just if you want a snack! I like these especially when I have a big sweet tooth.
There you have it-my top favorite snacks for on the go! Don’t get me wrong- I definitely go out to places, but it never hurts to eat the things from your house 😉
